Comparatives and superlatives
Objetivo
Al terminar sabrás comparar personas, lugares y objetos en inglés usando comparativos, superlativos y la estructura as... as.
En pocas palabras (lectura fácil)
Para madres, padres y tutores (1 minuto)
Explicación
El comparativo compara dos elementos y suele ir seguido de than: «My street is quieter than yours». El superlativo destaca un elemento dentro de un grupo y va precedido de the: «This is the quietest street in the town».
Los adjetivos largos (de dos o más sílabas, salvo los acabados en -y) usan more / the most: expensive → more expensive → the most expensive. Algunos de dos sílabas admiten también -er / -est (quiet → quieter, simple → simpler); ante la duda, consulta el diccionario. Nunca se mezclan las dos formas: «more taller» es incorrecto.
Hay adjetivos irregulares que conviene memorizar: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → farther / further → the farthest / the furthest.
Para expresar igualdad se usa as + adjetivo + as: «Lucas is as tall as Inés». En negativa, not as... as indica que el primero tiene menos de esa cualidad: «The bus is not as fast as the train». Tras el superlativo se usa in con lugares o grupos («in the class», «in the world») y of con un número de elementos («of the three»).
Idea clave: Corto: -er than / the -est. Largo: more... than / the most. Igual: as... as. Y los irregulares: good, bad, far.
Ejemplo resuelto: Compara: Hotel Sol (60 €/noche, 7/10) y Hotel Mar (95 €/noche, 9/10).
- Paso 1 Precio: «cheap» es corto, así que usamos -er: The Hotel Sol is cheaper than the Hotel Mar.
- Paso 2 Precio al revés: «expensive» es largo: The Hotel Mar is more expensive than the Hotel Sol.
- Paso 3 Valoración: «good» es irregular: The Hotel Mar is better than the Hotel Sol.
- Paso 4 Con as... as: The Hotel Sol is not as good as the Hotel Mar.
Resultado: The Hotel Sol is cheaper, but the Hotel Mar is better.
Resumen
- Comparativo + than para comparar dos elementos; the + superlativo para destacar uno en un grupo.
- Adjetivos cortos: -er / -est (con cambios ortográficos: bigger, nicer, happier).
- Adjetivos largos: more / the most.
- Irregulares: good-better-best, bad-worse-worst, far-farther/further-farthest/furthest.
- Igualdad: as... as; desigualdad: not as... as.
