Cuando el verbo introductorio está en pasado (*said, told*), los tiempos suelen retroceder un paso (backshift): present → past; past simple y present perfect → past perfect; will → would; can → could; may → might; must → had to. *«I am tired» → She said (that) she was tired.* Si lo dicho sigue siendo verdad, el backshift es opcional.

También cambian pronombres, posesivos y expresiones de tiempo y lugar: *today → that day; tomorrow → the next/following day; yesterday → the day before; next week → the following week; here → there; now → then; this → that*.

En las preguntas indirectas desaparecen el auxiliar *do* y el signo de interrogación, y se usa orden afirmativo (sujeto + verbo): *«Where do you live?» → He asked me where I lived.* Las preguntas de sí/no se introducen con if/whether. Las órdenes y peticiones van con *tell/ask + objeto + (not) to + infinitivo*: *She told us not to touch it.*

Los verbos introductorios resumen la intención y tienen patrones propios: + to-infinitive (*promise, refuse, offer, agree*), + object + to-infinitive (*advise, warn, remind, encourage*), + -ing (*deny, admit, suggest*), + preposition + -ing (*apologise for, insist on, accuse sb of*). *Suggest* no admite *object + to*: se dice *She suggested going* o *She suggested that we (should) go*.

Idea clave: Estilo indirecto = un paso atrás en el tiempo + cambios de referencias + orden afirmativo en las preguntas.

Ejemplo resuelto: Transmitir: «I’ll send you the report tomorrow,» Elena told me yesterday.

  1. Paso 1 Verbo introductorio en pasado (told) → aplico backshift: will → would.
  2. Paso 2 Cambio pronombres: I → she; you → me.
  3. Paso 3 Cambio la referencia temporal: tomorrow → the next day / the following day.
  4. Paso 4 Mantengo tell + objeto (me) y añado that de forma opcional.
  5. Paso 5 Si quiero resumir la intención, puedo usar promise: She promised to send me the report.

Resultado: Elena told me (that) she would send me the report the next day. / Elena promised to send me the report the following day.
