Comparatives and superlatives
Objetivo
Al terminar sabrás comparar personas, lugares y cosas con los comparativos y superlativos de los adjetivos.
En pocas palabras (lectura fácil)
Para madres, padres y tutores (1 minuto)
Explicación
El comparativo compara dos elementos y suele ir seguido de than: *My brother is taller than me*. El superlativo destaca un elemento dentro de un grupo y va con the: *She is the tallest in the class*.
Los adjetivos cortos (una sílaba) añaden -er / -est: *cold → colder → the coldest*. Ortografía: si acaba en -e, solo -r / -st (*nice → nicer → the nicest*); si acaba en consonante + vocal + consonante, se dobla la última (*big → bigger → the biggest*); y los acabados en -y cambian a -ier / -iest (*happy → happier → the happiest*, *easy → easier*).
Los adjetivos largos (en general, dos o más sílabas, salvo los acabados en -y) usan more / the most: *expensive → more expensive → the most expensive*, *interesting → more interesting → the most interesting*. Algunos de dos sílabas admiten también -er / -est (*quiet → quieter*).
Hay irregulares que conviene memorizar: *good → better → the best*, *bad → worse → the worst*, *far → further / farther → the furthest / farthest*.
Para decir que dos cosas son iguales se usa as ... as: *Lucía is as tall as Marcos*. En negativa: *This film isn't as good as the book*.
Idea clave: Corto: -er than / the -est. Largo: more ... than / the most. Good → better → the best.
Ejemplo resuelto: Compara: Madrid (3,3 millones), Valencia (0,8 millones) y Teruel (36 000 habitantes)
- Paso 1 Elegimos el adjetivo: big, de una sílaba y con consonante + vocal + consonante.
- Paso 2 Comparativo: doblamos la g → bigger than.
- Paso 3 Superlativo: the biggest.
- Paso 4 Para el más pequeño: small → the smallest.
Resultado: Valencia is bigger than Teruel. Madrid is the biggest of the three cities, and Teruel is the smallest.
Resumen
- Comparativo: compara dos elementos (+ than).
- Superlativo: destaca uno en un grupo (the ...).
- Cortos: -er / -est, con reglas de ortografía. Largos: more / the most.
- Irregulares: good-better-best, bad-worse-worst, far-further-furthest.
- Igualdad: as ... as.
